Named for the far-north latitude that skims through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, 47 North is a performance group rooted in place, practice, and play. We are a transnational fusion dance troupe based in the Superior School of Dance in Hancock, Michigan, and we combine various belly dance styles with modern, jazz, hip hop, and other art forms that our members bring to the studio as musicians, martial artists, writers, yoga teachers, healers, costumers, painters, and all-round creative human beings.

The troupe includes dancers with many backgrounds and skill levels all united in creating and sharing unusual and lively performance pieces. Follow us on Instagram @47northfusion and on Facebook for show updates, goofery, and work-play with our friends 2nd Sandbar, Hello Station Photo (photo credit above), and the Keweenaw Roller Derby.

We also use the Critical Response Process and Datura Online community to deepen and challenge our dance practice. At home and afar, we build community: ask us about workshops  and collaborations!

Co-leaders Sylvia Schourek and Allison Mills both have decades of experience teaching and performing, and they share a love of dance in its many forms and rituals. In their day jobs, Sylvia is the owner and artistic director of the Superior School of Dance and Allison is a co-owner of Ghost House Farm and FreshCoast Yoga, the communications director for an Earth science nonprofit, and one of the dance school’s teachers. You can reach them or the troupe generally at 47northfusion@gmail.com
